Stratum IX

Finds that provided a dating of this stratum to the Amarna Period included:

  • several Egyptian vessels from loci attributed to this stratum have exact parallels at Amarna, including a chalice and a small drop-shaped vessel
  • a favissa, discovered in an open area running along the western side of the residential building, containing a pottery stand and a clay bulla bearing four hieroglyphs, namely, two w3ḏt and two nfr. The closest parallel to the clay bulla is a seal impression from el-Amarna and was thought to attest to correspondence between the two sites during that period.
  • one of the Stratum IX assemblages included Egyptian pottery and four square kurkar bases, each 13 cm square with sloping sides and a slight top surface depression. Identical bases were uniquely found at Amarna in a bedroom niche, used originally to support the legs of a bed.
  • Ten small cylindrical objects with square piercings and made of carnelian and a vitreous blue material, bearing traces of gold, were found on a floor surface. These objects have been compared to the components of a flail found in the tomb of Tutankhamun.
