The Eastern Desert refers to the desert region located broadly between the Nile River valley and the Red Sea.

Largely mountainous, though dissected by numerous wadis of varying size, the Eastern Desert represented a region of exploitation for ancient Egyptian civilisation, particularly with regard to its mineral wealth and resources. Though little populated, the Eastern Desert further offered transit corridors between the Nile and the Red Sea, facilitating contact with regions further to the east and south.
