The Fosse Temple at Lachish

The sheer abundance of pottery found in the excavation of Temples II-III was such that Magnus Ottosson was led to suggest that the structure did not represent a temple, but rather a potter's workshop [1980:90-92]. That this suggestion is invalid, however, can easily demonstrated by the presence of ceramic imports from Egypt, Cyprus and the Aegean, alongside artefacts other than pottery: ivory objects, calcite and glass vessels, faience, jewellery, scarabs and other seals, as well as specific cult objects and metal statuettes of deities.
