The fragment of a stone [1] block inscribed with hieroglyphics was excavated in Area G, stratum XIIb Ashdod.

The inscription is bordered to the right by a vertical line, suggesting that the fragment originally formed part of a left-hand doorjamb, once having displayed a vertical hieroglyphic inscription with the owner / dedicator's name and title(s)[2].

".... fanbearer on the king’s right hand ...."

Notes

  1. M. Dothan describes the material as being "kurkar" in the relevant plate description [1993:218].
  2. The Ashdod fragment is reminiscent of fragmentary doorjambs with similar vertical inscriptions excavated at Tel Beth Shean.
