Gazetteer of the New Kingdom Egyptian Empire in Western Asia
From ArchaeoWiki
A Gazetteer of the New Kingdom Egyptian Empire in Western Asia seeks both to document the New Kingdom Egyptian Empire in Western Asia, and to enhance the appreciation of contemporaneous indigeneous (primarily Canaanite) socio-political structures and organisation in the Levant, within a viable and interlinked reference dataset.

Introduction
The Gazetteer of the New Kingdom Egyptian Empire in Western Asia—in fulfilling the function of a geographical dictionary, based on toponymy—has adopted the general form of a long-form descriptive gazetteer. Several aspects of a short-form gazetteer have been integrated in places as additional enhancement. The Gazetteer moreover qualifies as a thematic gazetteer, on its highly selective basis for inclusion.
Basis for Inclusion
As revealed within our extant written sources, settlements and polities in the Levant and Western Asia are included within this Gazetteer on the basis of fealty or submission—whether actual, professed, implied or apparent—to the Egyptian crown, military and / or sovereignity, at any instance—continuously or discontinuously—within the period of the New Kingdom Egyptian Empire.
Explanation
The gazetteer has been compiled according to an adapted / normalised English (extended Latin alphabet) transliteration of the most frequently attested ancient forms for the period (usually Western Peripheral Akkadian, less frequently Egyptian or Western Semitic) and listed (in the first instance) in the following alphabetic sequence:
a b d e g h ḥ ḫ i j k l m n p q r s ṣ š t ṭ u w y z
No distinction in sequencing has been made between long and short vowels; neither has consideration been taken of ʾaleph, ʿayin, nor hyphens.
These forms will be employed in accompanying cartographic summaries (projected) and have been introduced in the interests of clarity, given the multiple variations in English transliteration for many names.
It is projected that a broad regional categorisation of settlements and polities listed will eventually accompany the alphabetic listing.
Translated excerpts from the Amarna correspondence are derived from Moran, Amarna Letters, unless otherwise noted.
