Merneptah (also transliterated Merenptah) was the fourth ruler of the Nineteenth Dynasty and the thirteenth son of Ramesses II the Great—the eventual successor to his long-lived father, twelve of his brothers having predeceased him.

The name of Merneptah is closely associated with the so-called "Israel Stela", a large stela originally of Amenhotep III, but taken from his mortuary temple and its reverse side employed for an inscription of Merneptah.

Aside from the Israel Stela, a number of additional records are known to have been commissioned by Merneptah. These include the Great Karnak Inscription and its abregé the Athribis Stela.

Building during the Reign

Merneptah initiated several large building projects during his reign, including a cult palace at Memphis and his own mortuary temple at Thebes.
