The Ramesside Period is a general term for the Nineteenth and Twentieth Dynasties in Egypt; the term, therefore, coincides with the Late New Kingdom period.

The designation "Ramesside" derives from the name Ramesses, that of the founder of the Nineteenth Dynasty Ramesses I and his long-lived grandson Ramesses II the Great. During the Twentieth Dynasty, a total of ten rulers—beginning with Ramesses III and ending with Ramesses XI—shared the name "Ramesses", stamping it upon the period as a whole.
