Excavation

In 1915, G. Dahl published a lengthy study of the history of Dor as reflected in written sources, anticipating many of the research problems that later expeditions were to engage.

The first excavations were undertaken at the site in 1924 when the English archaeologist John Garstang excavated a large temple structure (believing it to be Hellenistic) on the western side of the tell. In addition, Garstang dug two excavation trenches down to bedrock on the northern and southern sides of the mound.

Major excavations commenced in 1980 under the direction of Ephraim Stern and under the auspices of the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. This expedition was maintained on a mostly annual basis until 2000.

The expedition was relaunched in 2003 by a consortium of several veteran excavation members, including Ilan Sharon and Ayelet Gilboa.
