Thutmose II

Thutmose II was the fourth ruler of the Eighteenth Dynasty of ancient Egypt.

The highest preserved regnal year date for Thutmose II is his Year 1, most scholars currently agreeing that the reign lasted no more than three years in total.

At the king's side, Thutmose II's half-sister Hatshepsut served simultaneously as "Great Royal Wife" and as "God's Wife of Amun", appearing frequently (usually in the latter role) in the reliefs that decorated the Theban monuments of the ruler.

The extremely short duration of Thutmose II's reign has not unexpectedly resulted in a general dearth in discovery of his monuments throughout Egypt—and to date a complete absence in the north altogether.

For many years it was believed that no statues of the king made in his reign had been preserved. The carved rose granite and life-size statue of a seated man, however, wearing the White Crown with uraeus, together with a short sed-festival robe with crook and flail in the Osiride manner, was gradually reconstructed over many years from multiple fragments (including an inscribed base) excavated at Elephantine [Dreyer 1984]. Although damaged, the base inscription reveals the subject of the statue as Thutmose II[1].

Notes

  1. The base inscription has been altered (in keeping with many early Thutmoside inscriptions) and a crucial part of the inscription has been lost. It is the excavator's opinion nonetheless that the original dedictor of the statue could be identified as Hatshepsut, while she remained as regent, making the statue still posthumous—but only just.
