Vizier |vɪˌzɪə| |ˌvɪzɪə| (German: Wesire) is the common and conventional English-language translation for the highest ancient Egyptian administrative office immediately below the ruler. The term was adopted into English for the chief minister of the Egyptian state on analogy with the Ottoman chief minister; adopted from Turkish vezir, therefore, with origins in Arabic وزير wazīr "caliph's chief counsellor" and Persian vechir.
